Family Party at Falling Waters
My family threw me a barbeque party for my belated 21st and for my homecoming. Sarah came out from Pittsburg and Matt came from D.C., making the event a worlds-colliding DC-meets-Marvel sized clash of titans.

Laurel Independence Day celebration
From sunup to sundown I covered Laurel's July 4th celebrations (held the Saturday beforehand, on July 1st) for the Laurel Leader. I also managed to take a picture or two. Events included the parade, a concert, a car show, various track contests and, of course, fireworks. I thought the parade was terrifically American.

Postcards from Italy: Firenze (part 2)
Our last two days in Italy coincided with my birthday. On the 7th we went to the Academia and saw the very impressive David and other neat Mike-carved stuff. Then Sarah and I climbed to the top of the Duomo. We had lunch and then made off to the Boboli gardens for exploring and sneaky cake-eating activities. Then we ate too much cake with grappa and all felt sick for the rest of the day. That night we met some neat New Zealanders and all went funky disco dancing together.
The last day we saw the Uffizi and a cathedral of famous tombs.

Postcards from Italy: Firenze (part 1)
We stayed in Florence for four nights in an illegal hostel set up by a creepy Italian guy with a big dog and (we think?) a young Asian mistress. It's a long story. But we certainly had a good time catching uo with Sarah, seeing the Ponte Vecchio, Santo Spirito, the Medici chapel, the Duomo, piazza Signoria, Bargello, etc etc

Postcards from Italy: Rome (part 3)
Take me down to the Vatican City
Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty
Take me home
Just a' urchin
livin' under the street
I'm a hard case
that's tough to beat
I'm your charity case
So buy me somethin' to eat (for like 8 euros!)
I'll pay you at another time
Take it to the end of the (2 fucking hour long!) line

Postcards from Italy: Rome (part 2)
After an Italian breakfast in the hotel room, we took off on foot to be bombarded by history. And bombarded we were (metaphorically--joke's on you, Mussolini). The famous palace of Vittorio Emmanuel, the Roman forum, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and more decaying pieces of stone walls and columns than you could shake a stick at.

Postcards from Italy: Rome (part 1)
In early June Elana and I took off for Roma. Because of a misread exam schedule (my fault) we had to reschedule our flight for 8:00 in the morning, which meant sleeping at Stansted airport. To make this possible, we drank wine heavily on the ride up, and continued as we played air hockey and gin rummy in the airport. As a result I was able to catch 4 hours or so laying on a towel on the floor. Elana had less luck, but she also got some shuteye. It was surreal to be sleeping in this big darkened room with 150 other travellers.
We got to Rome unscathed, and after a short nap we hit the beautiful, warm, cyprus-lined streets. These pictures cover: the Spanish steps, the Pantheon exterior, some old cathedrals and Renaissance art, the Trevi fountain and the piazza Navona. Our hotel (the only one we could get reservations for) was a ubercool, 4-star ooze of black stone countertops and labrynths of metal railings. Talk about chic--they even served us breakfast. And as with any worth-its-salt European hotel, they were just rude enough to make you seem like their least important guest.
