A cheap pub, though a tad classy for my taste.

Sussex's International Dept. took upwards of 50 int'l kids of a "pub crawl" around Brighton, a decidedly English activity wherein a group slinks from pub to pub, craving new scenery and the same old drinks. Brighton is a pretty cool and inexpensive town when you have someone who knows the lay of the land showing you around.

The Downs is an area behind the University of Sussex. It is rural--more rural than Maryland or New York State gets, that's for sure. Sarah and I explored this endless mire of cow paddies and rolling hills after classes one day. The scenery is simply stunning--save for the weather, which never cooperates anyway.

As an introduction to Brighton a lot of us int'l students took a 5 pound bus tour around the Brighton area (i.e. Rainington, UK), followed by a walk-through tour of George IV's Royal Pavilion. The Pavilion is a massive, ornate building constructed by Georgy-Porgey as a summer pleasure palace for his many vacations (perhaps similar to a Texas ranch owned by another George I know). It's styled in very strange, Oriental architecture and decoration. I wish cameras had been allowed inside, but they were strictly forbidden. Naturally, I took some anyway, sans flash. Unfortunately, because of the Mission-Impossible-like manner in which I had to conceal my actions, the resulting pictures are little more than strange, abstract wisps of objects. Still, try squinting hard and you might get the idea. Or else, relax and defocus your eyes and you might see a sailboat!
Afterwards we took a walk through the Lanes, a quaint European labrynth of shops and cobblestones.

After the late night of hip-hopping about with Vittorio, I expected the next night would be a quiet one. But I had forgotten that it was Saturday--the vital Redskins game would be on.
But before that, the International Office took a bunch of us into Brighton for the best, cheap cuisine of the city. Several of us went to a Thai restaurant, where I broke my squid hymen with a delicious, rubbery curry.
After that we walked out to the Brighton Pier, which is not unlike a more quaint version of the Ocean City carnival--older, less cheezy, and, of course, more British. Everything was closed.
Finally we found an Australian (or, as we say here, Australasian) pub that was willing to turn on the game. Which, as you all know, the Redskins won without pains.

First night in town?!? An evening of pubbing and clubbing with the International Students at York House (or as it is being called by those witty Brits, "Yank" House). We began at a pricey little pub downtown, then moved to the beachside where there was an amiable spot underneath the boardwalk. Then it was off, drunkenly, to a hip hop club for absurd, touristy dancing. Scott and Vittorio are two especially entertaining characters.

On the second, I hit up some museums--none of which allowed for pictures to be taken inside. I went to the National Gallery, St Martin's-in-the-field Cathedral, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Brick Lane is a hip street, filled with night clubs, thrift stores and a lot of Indian restaurants...or "Asian," as they're called here. Most things were closed, but I found a good vintage shop and some weird foreign restaurants. More will be posted at http://sussexpatriate.blogspot.com. When? I don't know.

Holiday Party

Too busy packing for England today to write descriptions or summary of this terrific night. The pictures are here, the words will follow. I will note that the last pictures of Seth are me messing with him because of how numbingly high he is. Also, that one picture of Brett is easily my highest photographic achievement.
